Hiked Avalanche Peak at Arthurs Pass yesterday.  Is rated at perhaps the best day hike on the South Island, but, while very good, I think it actually trailed my 3 previous hikes by a little.  At 3600' of vertical, it is higher than the Mueller Hut hike (3300' or so), but actually felt a little easier, as mentioned by another hiker who had recently done both.  A few pics-



I  guess the most striking thing was the considerable exposure at certain points, especially near the top-

But on the way out, I stopped at this store in this podunk town to buy an ice cream.  It was the only store in a town of about 50 people, but notice the single parking meter in the middle of nowhere-



Who would park and pay?
